Is the Bible Still Relevant for My Life Today?
Overview
The Bible is thousands of years old. So is it still relevant to your life today? Pastor Brad Kirby's short answer is yes, whether you're a Christian or not. With Andre Samson asking the questions, Brad walks through how the Bible speaks to the natural world, to human nature, and to history. Then he gets to what makes it most relevant: it shows every one of us our greatest need, and how Jesus meets it. Finally, Andre asks the practical question. Will the Bible tell me which job to take or who to marry? Not like a rule book, Brad says, but it will guide you. So where do you turn first when you need direction?
Three Takeaways
The Bible speaks to more than you think
Even if you don't believe it, the Bible has a lot to say about the world you live in. Scripture describes things in nature that science later confirmed, and its towns, times, and details hold up as history. Its people sound a lot like us, too: reading the Psalms is like looking over David's shoulder at his diary.
Its biggest relevance is your heart
God's Word is living and active, and like a scalpel, it cuts away what separates us from God. It's the big story of who God is and His rescue plan for the world. Every person who has ever lived needs rescue from sin, and the Bible shows us how we're rescued in Jesus.
It's a lamp, not a magic 8 ball
The Bible won't tell you to buy a Honda or a Chevy, or which job to take. It isn't a rule book or a recipe that spits out exact answers. It points you in the right direction and shapes your heart, and God adds His Spirit, a good mind, His church, and prayer to help you find His will.
Scripture in This Episode
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Talk About It
When have you read something in the Bible and thought, "That sounds a lot like me"?
Brad compares God's Word to a scalpel. What might it be trying to cut away in your life right now?
What decision are you facing where you've wished for a clear "take a left or take a right"? How could Scripture, prayer, and the people around you help you walk through it?
Your Next Step
Pick one psalm this week and read it slowly, like looking over David's shoulder. Notice where it sounds like you, and talk to God about it.
