Measured Days, Meaningful Lives

Sermon Notes

The end of the year has a way of slowing us down. We look back. We take stock. We start asking questions that don’t usually make it into our busy days.

In Psalm 90, Moses invites us to do exactly that. He reminds us that our days are limited, God is eternal, and wisdom begins when we learn to live with that perspective. This message explores what it means to number our days, take sin seriously, and anchor our lives in the goodness of God rather than the temporary things that so easily consume our time.

Why Psalm 90 Makes Us Pause

The end of the year has a way of making us reflective. Without trying, we start replaying moments, counting losses, celebrating wins, and wondering where the time went. Psalm 90 meets us right there. It invites us to slow down and ask the questions we usually avoid.

God Is Eternal, We Are Not

Moses begins by reminding us who God is. Eternal. Unchanging. Outside of time. Then he reminds us who we are. Brief. Limited. Here for a moment. Wisdom begins when we see our lives in light of who God is, not the other way around.

Why Time Matters

Psalm 90:12 asks God to teach us to number our days. That is not an exercise in regret. It is a path toward wisdom. When we understand that our time is limited, we start paying attention to how we spend it. Time becomes a gift, not something to waste.

The Cost of Ignoring Sin

Moses doesn’t shy away from hard truths. Sin is serious, and it steals meaning from our lives. It keeps us from living the life God intends. Seeing God clearly helps us see our sin honestly, not to crush us, but to lead us toward repentance and renewal.

Satisfied by God’s Steadfast Love

The prayer ends with hope. God’s mercy satisfies us. His love gives joy that lasts. When we invest our lives in knowing Him and obeying Him, our days become meaningful, no matter how many we have left.

Living for What Lasts

We cannot control how much time we have, but we can choose how we live today. Psalm 90 reminds us that a meaningful life is built by investing in eternal things. When God is our dwelling place, there is joy for the journey and hope at the end.
