Elementary // Love Week 4

Memory Verse:
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NLT)

Definition

Love: Love is patient, kind, and lasts forever!

Teaching Truth

Knowing God loves us helps us love others

Questions to Ask Your Child

READ 1 SAMUEL 20:1-4, 12-17

  1. What was David worried about? (He was afraid because King Saul, Jonathan’s dad, tried to kill him.)

  2. What was Jonathan willing to do for David? (Anything he asks) How was this different than you might expect him to act towards someone who was going to be king instead of him?

  3. What did Jonathan know to be true about God? (God’s love is faithful and forever, He has a plan and will make it happen. The Lord will be with David and make him king like He promised.)

  4. Read our memory verse, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT. How did Jonathan show David kindness and patience? (He listened to his friend and wanted to do anything to help him.) How did he show that he wasn’t self-seeking or envious of David? (He was willing to give up the throne for his friend because he knew that’s what God’s plan was.) How did God use Jonathan to protect David and give him hope? (He helped David escape from his dad. He reminded him of God’s plan and love for him and that God would always be with him.

Activity

Help your kids to make a list of people who they can love show God’s love to this week. (siblings and/or another relative, teacher, mailman, friend at school, teammate, etc.) As you make your lists, remind them that the reason we can show love to others is because of God’s great love for us! Brainstorm some fun ways to encourage and love a few people on that list. Examples include: write someone a note letting them know you’re thankful for them, do a sibling’s chore without expecting anything in return, take time to listen to a friend.
